BISPHENOL A
The federal government added Bisphenol A (BPA) to Canada's toxic substances list in October 2010. BPA is an industrial chemical used to make a hard, clear plastic known as polycarbonate, which is used in many consumer products, including reusable water bottles and baby bottles. Bisphenol A is also found in epoxy resins, which act as a protective lining on the inside of metal-based food and beverage cans.

CADMIUM
Cadmium is known to be a human carcinogen. Like lead, it can hinder brain development in the very young, according to recent research. Children don't have to swallow an item to be exposed — they can get persistent, low-level doses by regularly sucking or biting jewelry with a high cadmium content.

Cetyl alcohol is used as an emollient (skin softener), emulsifier, and thickener in creams and lotions. Cetyl alcohol should never be ingested. DIETHANOLAMINE (DEA) Diethanolamine (DEA) is a chemical that is used as a wetting agent in shampoos, lotions, and cosmetics. It creates a rich lather in shampoos and produces a nice consistency in skin care. On its own, it is harmless, but when combined with other ingredients in a shampoo, cream or lotion, it reacts to produce nitrosodiethanolamine (NDEA), an extremely carcinogenic compound which can easily be absorbed through the skin. It has been linked to stomach, bladder and intestinal cancers.

Ethylene glycol is a colorless, odorless, syrupy liquid that has a sweet taste. It can exist in the air in vapor form. Other common names for ethylene glycol are glycol and glycol alcohol. FORMALDEHYDE
Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable, strong-smelling chemical that is used in building materials and to produce many household products. It is also known as a preservative which includes Imidazolidinyl Urea, Diazolidinyl Urea, DMDM Hydantoin and Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate.

FRAGRANCE
The chemicals used in fragrances (or parfums) are often unidentified and not fully disclosed on the packaging. 95% of the chemicals used in fragrances are synthetic derivatives of petroleum. Petrolatum is a petroleum byproduct that coats the skin to keep in moisture. Petroleum by-products can pass through the brain barrier and cause ADD/dyslexia symptoms. It's also known as petroleum jelly, mineral oil, liquid paraffin and paraffin wax.

PHTHALATES
On June 10, 2011, the Consumer Product Safety Act will come into force in Canada and the new regulations will restrict the use of six phthalates in toys and child care articles in order to limit exposure to children and infants. Phthalates are used to soften plastics that would otherwise be brittle and crack when bent. Phthalates have a high toxicity level and are found in an amazing array of products. In personal care items, they're used to help lubricate other substances, help lotions penetrate and soften the skin, and help fragrances last longer. They're also used in toys, electronics, computers, car-care products, and many household products.

POLYBROMINATED DIPHENYL ETHERS (PBDE's)
Commonly known as brominated flame retardants, BFRs have been added to many common products found in the home and in baby products, such as mattress pads, and toys, such as dolls, swords, action figures and ones made of foam and rubber.
